major progress in the "reducing the amount of pedal strokes top to bottom project"......:thumb: well done everyone,Ben,Graham, sime,Tom,Matt,Dave,Will,Ken,
James and of course our new friend the truelly mental "Rob the Canadian" who carried not one but two(sneaky as he was told not to)6x6 by 6metres long posts :wooot: :nono: :wooot: on his back up the hill,...........nutter :D also thanks to "James Kendal Trees" for there very valuable lift with the timber and for starting the carving stuff

and what a monster it is too, hopefully sime will have the 'first attempt' picture aswell which resembled a full size rugby post more than anything! ending sunday night we managed to get the bulk of the frame work up and the decking across the top, aswell as important bracing and most importantly of all the hand rails.

a productive weekend, i am sure everyone who helped out will agree.

It looks tall and feels taller when your up it. The first attempt would have been totally insane

matt
05-12-05, 18:08
the first attempt would have got you loads of speed. but what you did on sunday look's awsome. when the roll in is finished, the unfit people like myself won't be knackered before the first berm, which will be good.:thumb: :thumb: :D :D

ok all you budding mathematicians whats the perfect angle,in building terms 45 degrees has some good things going for it ;)
maybe Dr Nimul can help :?

dave_mawe
08-12-05, 17:34
the higher the angle the more speed it should give you but if you go to steep, the angle at the bottom might slow u down as the front wheel hits the ground it wont be smooth. A dirt transition would sort it out though, maitain your speed and make it smoother to ride. 45 degrees is the number most commonly used when building anything really.

45° distributes any load most efectively. If its steeper, it wont necessarily be faster, as the slope length also comes into the equation.
I think that instead of working to an angle, we should decide how long we want it and just build it regardless of angle. I dont think we need to worry about optimum angle as whatever i think it will give plenty of speed.
If you really want to know the optimum, i'll need the exact height of the platform and to keep things simple keep it on the same base level (although it isnt level in reality).

speed has to be gained over distance, therefore 45deg. wouldnt necessarily be the right angle. even if it was a more shallow angle, with a longer slope then you would gain alot of speed.

Isnt that exactly what i said?
And as the angle decreases, slope length increases.

Take a look at the quick sketches.
To me 45º looks ay steep.
30º looks spot on.

Also, with a quick model of my bike (wheelbase and bb height) it would ground the chain ring if it was 45º

absolutly 30 (looks round the key board for degree sign) looks just right some thing you can pedal down aswell but something that isnt so steep most of your speed is soaked up in the change of the dangle :thumb:

One word 'wowsers'. that looks like loadsa fun. Whats the transition like though, from ramp to ground? Does it loose any speed or is it super flowing???

dave_mawe
02-01-06, 10:11
It needs a dirt transition we were just using a couple of bits of wood. but when the first berm for the flowshow is changed it'll be awesome

Carldeenio
02-01-06, 19:42
i hear the starts finished, looking forward to some piccies being posted...

It is well fast it really gets you going. Just need a better burm onto flowshow then it'll be awsome!!

as some will know there's been some building going on near the start, namely a steep to right hand turn chute thing off the right hand side of the start tower followed by a rolling double(i'm sure there's a name for it) :D a big thanks to all the folk who helped (in all sorts of ways ;) ) cheers Fish

Baker
28-02-06, 20:48
I dont know how people will clear the new double bearing in mind that ben was just getting it but that was in wet and he had lost a bit of confidence i think due to falling/slipping out saturday i think. it is a good enough launch i think. Just go for it mate. I think i will soon.

dave_mawe
28-02-06, 21:06
That was rather funny on saturday. Kinda put me of the new roll down though because ben messed up on it
