"The Mission" Me,Graham & Ben will try to convince the Judge's(in this case a stop watch) and the general public that we are ....................downhill racers:w00t:
"The venue" is Hopton Castle nr Ludlow,Shropshire and we've just three weeks(Jan21/22) to get our errrrm unfit(exclude Ben) arse's into shape :hmm: we will be riding under the RATZ TEAM banner,so obviously we're gonna take this seriously as club honour is at stake etc etc
those of you with the right bike, transport and money click here (http://www.pearcecycles.co.uk/Racing/SWS06_ENTRY_FORM.pdf) but get your ass into gear as places are limited to 250,we're not sure that we've got places yet.
i'll keep y'all posted on progress/nervous condition as the 22nd approach's :D
Bring it on :ymachine:

Race report:cool:
After an early start on sat morning, the day nearly went wrong near Nottingham when a Mitsubishi pick up attempted a high speed inside over taking manuver on me and Fraser, unfortunately I didn??t see him till last second and ??.errrrr  accidentally:rolleyes: ??errr nearly ran him off the road:rolleyes: ! I heard his tyres really screech.
Still, arrived safe and early.
Hopton castle sure is a very picturesque area, as in very hilly. After signing in getting changed etc meeting up with Disfunktional crew we jumped on the shuttle (tractor & trailer) and went to the start, the weather had been kind in the previous week, but it looked like the hill held on to its moisture think it certainly made the ??team? a little nervous,
The course starts off with a out in the open straight medium gradient into dark pines fast left berm into a tricky little jump tight in the tree??s (was to be my 2nd run downfall:( ) into a few flat turns with some roots and small kickers with very rooty landings alternative lines all over the place then over a small lane and back into the tree??s for more of the same but slightly more open turns, then the first really serious root section like big fat fingers interlocked across the trail:eek: then past this section your still in the woods, you hit some more open turns then suddenly your out in the open and recently clear felled section this was about as steep as the trespass trail but twice as long and just a big mat of roots stumps thick mud and some rocks and some jumps:wooot: as this section ended you went back into big more open tree??s and into some big flat switch backs all covered in roots and stumps which got less and less you could get a good rhythm going thro here :D this got steeper, then into a tight turn with a diagonal 1m drop off (tricky:wow: ) across a small lane and into thick small trees?? with flowing bermed and very muddy turns with drops out of this into a short more open and dry section, then a tight turn between two big tree??s and across the main uplift road and into a steep chute and the final section of about six fast left and right open turns some bermed, then a big high speed step down jump:eek: which you could roll or fly into a big right hand berm with massive breaking bumps on the entry then a cut across a steep hillside section on a very narrow off camber and slippery path into a big left hand downward turn over a nice take off bearing right and on to the last table top jump 8m and then the 50m flat sprint to the finish line:D .
Practice was very entertaining to say it was muddy would be an understatement, it was really fluffed up with all the riders tyres but not that wet and tyres wouldn??t clear very well and just trying to stay on till the finish was an achievement in its self I can??t say for the others but I only ??cleaned? the course once, which felt excellent:D . People gorming off looking at lines became quite an issue:mad: , I myself mowing down some bloke (nobber):ahol: who didn??t heed my shout, this aside the practice went really well and the day was top fun:cool: .
The travel lodge was a good move as the temp dropped to about ??2 and getting all our kit dried etc, however I can??t recommend the local pub ??Salway Arms? bad service, a long wait for the food, which tasted good but unfortunately we all had the ??shits? next morning, to a lesser or greater degree (I??ll let Fragy tell us about the lay-by portaloo ??incident? ).
Race day see??s the ground frozen hard and thick fog and its very cold:( , practice was suppose to start at 8 nobody was in a hurry, least of all us. By about 8.30 the shuttle was running, so despite feeling a little anxious about the conditions we bit the bullet and went up, the ice wasn??t an issue, however the extra moisture made the course have a bit less grip:\ and the fog was causing some bad steaming problems (it was too dark under the tree??s for the mighty smith turbo goggles).
I??ll let the others make their own comments about practice, as for myself I didn??t get a clear run either because I crashed or someone else had in front of me, I did however have a good session and was pleased to be dropping the tricky drop back wheel first:cool: .
And then from 11 the racing starts with me Graham, Fraser and Ben all starting within 10 mins of each other, we had discussed a strategy the previous day ands that was to pedal like crazy thro the easy bits;) and then slow down for the really gnarly shit  stay on and get a time, then really go for it 2nd run:D , turned out to be a good plan as all 4 of us made it down without crashing, that??s not to say there weren??t some issue??s tho, Fraser really getting crossed up on the tabletop being one of them, me and graham clipping tree??s and loosing your feet off the pedals etc.
I??ll let the others comment on their own runs, my second ??go for it? run started really well twice the speed thro the first berm, then just clipped a tree with my left shoulder the with right (think pin ball) hit the jump no footed and over the bars I went at quite a pace, I had told myself to get up and get back on if I had a crash and worry about injury and mechanicals once rolling again, I got a big cheer as I got back on and found my chain jammed:cry: . A quick stamp on the pedals and it snapped, not to be discouraged I pumped and paddled my way down much to the amusement of the spectors who gave great encouragement when they saw I had no chain on. Spurred me on somewhat:devil: , I make it down to the finish in 4.54 just to nearly pump past Graham on the finish line who had just got the biggest applause of the day for getting straight back on after his massive stack on the table top:devil: and got a time of 5.17(he straighten his bars first:rolleyes: ).
All in all a great experience, meeting up with old and new friends (be sure to check out the disfunktional dirt site) and I for one can??t wait for the next round Feb. 18/19th at Bringewood in the same area.
BRING IT ON :tune: :bana:

Ben
23-01-06, 17:23
A top weekend no doubt, if anyone ever says racing can be addictive believe it, or even better try it out, super.

really go for it 2nd run:D , turned out to be a good plan as all 4 of us made it down without crashing, that’s not to say there weren’t some issue’s tho,

my second run was a disaster, on the bling 3ft step down i pulled up way to early and landed with my rear wheel still on the top sending me stumbling, by the time i regained my bike i heard the whistle nearest the drop indicating a rider who flew past delaying my set off even more, anyway second run was poor 3.59 i think as opposed to my 3.49 which i am confident i could easily better, gutted. The rent'a'bike was good, one of ironhorses low range freeride rigs 6" up front and 7" on the rear, although next time at bringewood Jim Walker has promised me the sunday tested in dirt to ride if the frame didnt arrive. :)

Or are you all too tired to write a report tonight?

that about sums it up, Ben 25th,Graham 12th out of 12,me 7th out of 12.
second race run was cancelled due to thick fog/clouds making it too dark to see :eek:under the dense pine tree's, even so it was a top weekend........more later

Well done everyone, unlucky about the fog!!

mr fish
20-02-06, 19:05
Saturday started out looking a bit grim with low cloud and thick fog and drizzle but soon started to clear the sun eventually came out :D the course at Bringewood was excellent even with the mud  it was steep enough to keep things flowing nice without having to pedal like a madman (like Hopton) the track started off with a bit of a slope into a series of rutted switch backs which seemed to have a lot of clay in them quite slippy on sat with plenty of roots thrown in this brought you to the road gap jump i rolled this as the landing had 3 inchs of fluffy clay/mud and the tranny was a mile away :( amongst some trees(Ben landed this no footed:\ i'm sure he's going to tell us about it) taking you into the next section of more very fast flowing banked turns in almost complete darkness  with some sketchy off cambre roots and some very tight exits between trees leading you down to a open area with a steep (ish) very very off cambre left turn covered in fluffy mud with 30 ft of run out so if you messed it up you ended right off the fast line for the (motorway) straight and smooth but very slippery for a 100ft then back into the woods for a big (ish) double followed by a very fast fairly straight section with lots of rollers and kickers (my favorite section) and roots over another fire road and into a flatter but very rooty section with multiple line chioce followed by some more big banked turns and then down a quite rutted chute into a big bomb hole jump :D followed by a left hand hip and a right hand bermed turn down onto another fire road crossing and into the final section of more swithbacks and roots getting steeper and then into a very steep section of a gulley 2ft wide and 2ft deep going left right left right with big fat roots all over dropping you down a steep bank with a tree stump kicker a third of the way down boosting you rolling back up like a bomb hole jump for the final double with table top landing (i only saw the elites make the tranny) and the 100ft slighty off chambre flat sprint to the finish, this was very sketchy/slippery some people binned it within 20 ft of the finish line on this section.
i had a great time and really improved my performance :D the result could have been so much better but for a really stupid mistake smacking the left side of the bars into tree on the last very steep section and losing my footing and tumbled off i got back fairly quick and nailed the last section with no back brake  i reckon i lost about 10 seconds even so i loved the run down, it really smoothed out as i went faster and was a bit gutted when they cancelled the second run due to low cloud/thickfog making it very difficult to see as i was up for a more focused charge down the hill to try and improve my time and 7th place out of 12  all in all tho a great weekend..........next round....bring it on !

Baker
20-02-06, 19:16

I landed the step down no footed on the 1st race run, hopefully there will be a pic of it somewhere floating around the internet as i recall a few flashes going off and random strangers 'egging' me on, still great fun, was a bit gutted with my result but i shall have a bike by the end of the week so practice, practice, practice!

Well done lads! how did Graham get on? there's been no mention, didn't he go or something?

The Baker boys are up for round 3. I'm a bit worried about all this talk of darkness, what with my black helmet, black trousers and new bike that's blacker than a black thing that's been sprayed extra black, then dipped in crude oil and polished with coal dust. Will anyone actually know I'm there?

mr fish
22-02-06, 13:27
i just realised i forgot to mention about Graham(sorry G) he had a few spills in practice and didn't get a clean run on sat(a bloke from leisure lakes set up his forks for him lucky lad).
sunday practice didn't go to well for him either with a collision with a tree etc and bashed his hand up a bit, however his race run was fairly clean with no offs altho he looked a bit sketch over the last double  the comentator gave us a big laugh for those of you who remember the "Bionic Man" with his comment "in 12th place Graham Austin...........a man barely alive" :D :D :D
and compared to round 1 we both pulled the leader in

So, whats the sleeping/acomidation arrangements for saturday? i have worked out you can get two seporate beds out of the sofa's they have there, it will be 4 in one room 3 in the other, people going are :-

Fish
Grayham
Ken
James
Jay
Grayham Mckay
and myself

if you want to have a lye in then i would recomend not being in my room ;)
For the 3 man room it will cost £15 each
the 4 man £11.25 each

traveling, Fish has said that he will kindly take Grayhams Jays and my bikes, Grayham has a 1 litre punto, i dont know what you have Jay, either way grayham has said he will take the driving in turns if your OK with that and obvoiusly petrol money shall be split equally and accordingly

so any suggestions

Baker

I am not sure but i think that if you ring hamsterly you can book an uplift day if you gather a big enough group, is that right anyone?

Ben

It was an awesome weekend. Practice was cloudy but the weather held out all day for us. No one didn't crash but none of us came out with more than a couple of bruises and scratches. The track was really gnarly with one hell of a lot of roots. The top section was losing people nearly every time but the bottom section was really fats and quite flowing with some nifty jumps that get you over chunky polished off roots! Woke up this morning though and Ben took a look out the window and all there was to see was a great big white blur! Went down to breakfast and the woman at reception told us the race was cancelled!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HEAVY BUMBER!!!!!!! It didn't ruin it much really though because we had such a great day Saturday. Hopefully they will reschedule.

mr fish
12-03-06, 18:13
saturday was mint, the track was fairly fast and flowed really nice and shared a big section from the previous course, which was also my favourite bit as well,so first run down i felt fairly well dialled in,this made me feel i had the time to section some of the more challenging sections, however the greater speed lead to some very hairy moments and a very big handstand over the bars and a face plant into graham's giant chain device,(i now love full face helmets even more) and also gave myself an even bigger right hand :(
i had mixed feelings when i looked out the window and saw the heavy snow fall,on one hand i felt gutted the race was cancelled and on the other i really didn't fancy the track covered in snow with the added freezing conditions  however saturday makes up for it

Will
12-03-06, 20:01
Unlucky, are they planning on rescheduling.

Baker
12-03-06, 20:12
I sure do hope they do because i found that one of my favorite tracks! Or a refund to enter the midland series coming up!

fragy
12-03-06, 20:17
must need your lucky mascot fish 2 days and 2 runs with me (must beg the other half more in future) joking apart shame about today but sounds like you all had a really good day yesterday just a shame its so far to go back for a re-run

Will
12-03-06, 20:21
Baker how did the stem hold out?

Baker
12-03-06, 20:34
It was awesome thanks! I felt even more in control of my bike and in some of the tech DH sections i felt great thanks!

Kenny B
12-03-06, 20:50
Saturday was brill. I couldn't believe some of the stuff I was managing. Then on later runs was doing it even faster. I was really looking forward to the buzz of entering the finish "Arena" with a big jump, it looked the business.Sunday morning was a real dissapointment, even though it looked absolutely beautiful.
The weekend wasn't a total loss though....... I OVERTOOK Ben!!!!!!!! Yes, it was a cool, calm, clinically performed move. The only thing Ben did wrong was that he wasn't pedalling fast enough at the time. I told him " just because your'e sat on your bum in the mud having crashed doesn't mean you can stop pedalling"

Will
12-03-06, 22:21
HAHAHA nice one, a great contrast in mascilinity there Kenny the hardcore biker act and saying it was beautiful but i know what u mean the snow can look nice, untill it turns yellow hehe  sorry i went off on one there, glad you all had a good time.

Kenny B
13-03-06, 18:02
Don't get me on to yellow snow again and dog muck ....I'll be ranting all night.

Baker
13-03-06, 18:05
Rang Pearce cycles today and they said there are two things they can do about the money. 1-Give a full refund of the race entry and 2-carry the entry over to the first round of the midlands super series. I also asked if my dad didn't want to race if they would be able to just give a £10 refund and enter me in the uplift and race although I think my dad will be up for the whole thing again. So hopefully we'll be in the mss!

What's it to be then, refund or round 1 of summer series?

Are amateurs like me still welcome at the summer series?

Is Hopton Castle any harder than Bringewood because I was just about on my limit there?
What are the other RATZ team planning to do?

jay dh
13-03-06, 19:37
im up for going in for the next round on 2nd April. summer series is open to everyone kenny i wouldnt worry about it. if you made it down bringewood you should make it down anything. what with the snow etc if forgot that tenner, up at the hill this weekend?

mr fish
13-03-06, 19:39
i'm not sure what to do,i don't really fancy the hopton round as the track there is lot more physical(read flatter:( ) and for me not near as much fun as Bringewood ;) i might just get a refund and enter a later round ;)

Kenny B
13-03-06, 19:48
Jay - no rush for the tenner, see you when I see you. James is really nagging to do April. If it had been Bringewood and definitely dry I'd be there like a shot! but not so sure about another new track - just lack of confidence I suppose. That's why I want to gauge interest for the April round to see if a "Team" will be up for it. Any way, if we count you and James as IN, me half and Fish sounded like about a quarter.... thats two and three quarters..nearly a team!!!

Baker
13-03-06, 19:52
I think i am up for anything i wouldn't mind trying out the hopton track. Anyone else's thoughts on what to do?

DAN HART
13-03-06, 19:58
sounds like everyone had a really good day on sat. id love to have a go. just trying to persuade the misses to let me go away for the whole weekend. the track looked dry on that video, shame it snowed. what is the date of the next race people are entering?

Baker
13-03-06, 20:04
Well the next race date is 1st and 2nd of april but we aren't sure whos actually entering yet but we have the ok from my mum. I think it was a good idea taking her out for tea dad lol.

Will
13-03-06, 20:06

Kenny B
13-03-06, 20:24
I think i am up for anything i wouldn't mind trying out the hopton track. Anyone else's thoughts on what to do?
See what I mean, I'm trying to carefully weigh up the pros and cons and considering the expense and all james can say is "I'm up for it, I want to race, Let me race, go on please let me race ....etc" Then I find out he's surreptitiously (check that one, spelling police) bribed his mum by fooling me in to taking her out for dinner to make up for being away last weekend. Devious or what! I'm being manipulated.

Will
13-03-06, 21:45

14-03-06, 13:53
Quality....5 star effort there young Baker......live to ride and stop at nothing to achieve it.

Kenny...accept this as the way from know on, racing is in the blood and only gets more infectious.

Kenny B
14-03-06, 14:44
I think I'm getting infected too. Even though we didn't actually race, the general Buzz about the place on practice day was amazing. I've been thinking for a while now that purist free-ride, although brill, isn't exactly what I want and lets face it I'm getting a bit old for the really Sick jumps - and I just can't get the hang of dirt-jump. But not having ridden a full DH track since Fort Bill last August I'd forgotten just how good pure DH is. It's so addictive, I have to have more!...... Where's those applications James?

Baker
14-03-06, 15:20
They are filled out ready for you to sign with the envelope filled out and everything! Does this mean we're going does it does it???????!!!!!!!!!!!!!! please please please! Is any one else going for deffinite? Are you if your bike is ready will?

No! unfortunately not it won't be ready for another month :D nearly there! I'm up for some in the summer time (If it's not in the way of exam's :( )

Baker
14-03-06, 18:22
I talked to Ben today and he said he isn't sure about it yet. I think I would do some more if my dad didn't mind in the summer but like you said Will some might be in the way of exams! Maybe graham, that would be awesome and it is near craven arms where we drove through last time. It is only like 3 nearly 2 weeks away so we'll have to make quite a quick decision soon.

Ben
15-03-06, 09:10
There is a possibility i can go, i really would like to as i enjoyed hopton last time ronnd, i will know for sure this weekend, ease the petrol load Jay ;)
