Following on from the recent picture of the hamster wheel, thought it might be fun to gather together some decent pics of interesting northshore features from elsewhere. You never know we might even be able to get some of these built.;)

First off - a helter skelter from Devon - http://www.haldonfreeride.org/index.html

sure helterskelters look like fun. but theyre apparently a total nightmare to build.

Yeah that figures - loads of angles etc to get right!

jack

seems like a lot of effort to put into a trail feature thats not THAT much fun.

Will

Still would be ace to have one!!

jack

yea, i suppose.

wonder how long that feature in the pics will last. It looks cool, and looks like a lot of work went into building it. But fixing to trees is a big no no. It damages the tree and would turn into a maintenance nightmare.

jack

it would have been just as easy for them to stick a telegraph poll in a s main support aswell. lazyness or inexperience?

looks cool but for the amount of time, effort and timber thats gone into building that you could build some really nice stuff. looks abit like a motorway slip road to me!

Well,.. the Helter took two days to build, and most of that was one person building by themself. It took a few more people to dig the holes and get the uprights in previously however.

Fixing to trees, although generally it should be avoided, in this instance it made sense. Fixing to a tree isnt a problem as long as it is done responsibly. As long as the correct methods are used then the tree or anyone else will be in no danger.

Permission was the first thing to get! Important to ask the tree owner!

The fixings are galvanised coach bolts, so they wont harm the tree at all. They also have the added adavantage of being able to be unscrewed when they need removing so this presents no problem to whoever may want to fell the tree in the future.

This is the main problem with tree fixings, they present a real problem when the forestry are trying to fell the trees.
If there is any metal (nails, screws) left in the tree then it could be potetially fatal to anyone using a chain saw or excavator.
The tree has also been plotted on a map held by the FC and marked as potentially containing metal. This means that when it is eventually felled, the excavator will lop it off 20ft up where no one could reach.

I agree that there is alot of wood in the construction, but hey, you've gotta try these things eh, otherwise you'd never know.

you have some nice looking trails there! you also seem to have a bigger hill than us lol!

Looks awesome it would be fun to have one although it looks real complicated!

OK what about this one from Esher Shore

http://www.eshershore.com/images/rotor_6.JPG

If you had it higher and skinnier, with several more 'steps' you would have to hop sideways down the whole thing...?

like the idea of coming from a skinny with drop to somthin that runs parrallel (sp?) to it, but if you had any more then one it would get abit too trialsy. theres plenty of walls around towns for hoppin around on! we need big fast stuff, like a step up or big hip! ** hint hint **

The stunt in the start of the thread looks good, but I think the safety fence around it would ruin it.

Them pics look really good Jay, the last two are great and the step up idea would be good onto a big step down meaning the bar is set getting onto the obsticle, knowing the difficulty of the drop ahead

Baker

I realy like the idea of the step up ladder step down thing going on in the last pic and the first wooden launch looks sick!!

Haldon looks to have an awful lot of potential. Shame its so far away from us. But who knows, maybe sometime might get to check it out :) and esher shore maybe;)

Found another one that looks interesting - I assume that both sides come down as you ride over it due to the chain....

thats a discombobulator mate!! they meant to be trickier than they look, the hard ones need loads of speed and tonnes of balance!! hence i won't be going near one!! :(

Baker
13-05-06, 10:51
Look good fun but real tech! Looks like a good thing for up the woods maybe? Pretty intense balance practice by the sounds of hatchleader!

Herts Shore - the most hardcore stuff I've seen in the UK - not been yet but hope to some time. Some badass skinnies and lots of scary high stuff.

http://www.martinross.fpic.co.uk/c402817.html

It's on private ground so they can build what they want...

Also, check out this awesome looking wallride from the same venue:

Baker
14-05-06, 18:43
That is making me feel sick just lookin at it lol! Am not too keen on skinnies though, too much damage to ya bike and am a general bore lol!

Baker
14-07-06, 18:24
Ya but nothing too skiny! Nice and tech though!

ji_
14-07-06, 18:31
Looks kinda like it would make you seasick :)

Ben
14-07-06, 21:56
i like the idea that you could double up the first one and land on the second down slope, the feature can get progressivly harder and harder, i have tried to explain something like this to a few people before, that wooden launch looks nice and steep too, should kick you up a fair bit

If anyone's going out to Morzine I recommend checking out the shore in the Chatel valley - pretty tasty but there's some nasty landings about. Saw one poor Frenchie land sideways on his hip from about 8ft - nasty!
