View Full Version : new forks ?
Well ive delayed buying new forks for my kona shred for quite a while, but gawd i miss my hardtail.
So im buying new forks for it, though i havnt a clue what to get.
I have a fairly unlimited budget (for single crown forks, not looking at foes double crown kinda prices :O:O) but i just need to get the right forks for the bike.
I kinda want it all mountain style, so it has to be reltively light, but strong still.
Because its a hardtail im limited to a maximum of about 130mm, (slightly more at a push) and id like stupid adjustable bits :D
so any suggestions ? lol
Buy some single crown travis' for your stinky, sell on your super t's for a good sum then get some pikes with earnings :D thats what i'd do anyway (although its the long way around things i know :p
What are travis reviews like at the moment ? Id probably still prefer 66's over them though..
Pikes i tink i might get, they look sweet and generally have v nice reviews.
Im not too keen on ripping apart my stinky yet though lol, it works as it is, and if i aint broke...
.........replace it anyway...... lol. ben idea seems pretty good actually dave! but with the amount of money you have available for forks i'd still go for some fox's
Yeh...from what ive heard on the fox's it dosnt sound great, the air versions bottom out abut an inch above there full travell, and air gets lost between chambres in the forks themselves causing progressive suspension loss lol, in other words, hit a bump u have 130mm travell left, another bump 100mm...then at the bottom u have to pump them up ??? not worth the price tag is what ive heard.
Almost everybody thats written a review on the fox's says get the air 66s, (apparantly adjustable betwween 40 and 170mm though 150-170 according to zocchi)
66's do seem nice ya. i know that about the talas's but the fox 36van's (coil option) have better reviews. but then they dont have adjustable travel.

as far as i know they are 150- 170 but i would get some pikes!! mine are awsome (426's btw)!! took em to glentress last week for first big test and once they eased up (out of box they bit sticky!!) they are like butter!! can't recommend them enough!! would have another pair in an instant!! thats my opinion anyway!!
my only experience with rockshox has been psylos so i cant comment on the pikes, but all that hassle with psylos that ben and nick have had has put me off rockshox for good. i've always found marzocchis to be buttery smooth. even when my dirtjumpers were in their last days they were still smooth.

Yeh that was my initial thoughts too, but you have to rember that since then theyve been taken over by SRAM, which seems to have put them in another league.
good point, hadn't taken that into account, although just bear in mind that its real cash you're parting with lol.
real cash ? pfft not if i pay online *so long as i cant see it its not real*
looks like illl probably be getting these http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=8900

good to hear :)
Update....
Daves got some Pike 426's and they are sweet, although i am sure he will let you know when he decides to log on ;)
One of my favourite features was the Maxle axle, i had expected it to be the same as my boxxer Maxle, instead its a QR style clamp that is threaded into the fork leg on one side, then, once tightened opens up the other end securing it in place.

maxels one of my fave things too!! very helpfull and very quick!! my 426's started a bit sticky from box so make sure he gives em a few runs to work in before passing judgement!!
Sounds good! Does he not ride his stinky any more or are we talking about a different dave?
