View Full Version : Wales trip
Yesterday me and my brother discovered a rather large tent and because me or my brother haven't had a holiday yet this year we thought it may be cool to go camping. Naturally i suggested somewhere like wales, Cwmcarn and Caersws. Just though if anyone was up for a few nights in the wales area at the end of august time. And suggestiongs where the best places in Wales are please???
look around the betsy-coed and bala area near the shropshire border, some AMAZING trails round there, and less then 20min car journey from the athertons own track
Caersws is like sweeet! i would love to come but 1 it would over lap with fort bill and 2 i am out of ridin for around 7 weeks due to caersws! Broke my arm right in the joint so i am pretty gutted! Pics hopefully of x ray soon! |Definitley go to caersws though you'll love it! big jumps and burms with steep steeep shoots all over!
I'm not sure whats gonna go on yet. cos me n my bro only came up with the idea at lunch time today. I think were just going for a few days and nights to somewhere in wales. But i just want to go to Cwmcarn so bad it might end up being South Wales. Plus Cwmcarn has the uplift on the mojo track so it'll be nice and quick and have some good downhill
cearsws is private land and trails i'm affraid, cwmcarn looks really good though
yeh thats why i'm steering clear because you can only ride on races and proper uplift days

If you've got time have a go on the downhill at the Climachx trail near machynellth, its a bit of a push but if you follow the rainbow signs it takes you to an alternative start point. From there you have a short section with some small wooden structures then round this monster wooden berm onto the downhill which is probably the best thing i've ever ridden. Its so fast and covered in jump then nearer the bottom changes to big bermed switchbacks!!:)
Can anyone name places with good DH tracks. i'll only be looking to ride DH because i'll still probably running single speed so wont really be wanting to do any climbing. My bro wants to go to more the snowdonia are because theres more for him to do. but any suggestions of places and tracks to ride would be greatly appreciated

I would suggest you check out Nant-Yr-Arian, it's 15 minutes drive from Aberystwyth (or a long uphill ride on twisty roads, not what you want with singlespeed).
The trail sections of each of the three circuits are all mostly downhill, and they are all great. The bits between the trail sections are on rocky roads and are mostly uphill, but it's not technical and you can always walk on those bits.

If you watch this video, that is one trail section, at the start you can see the kind of road I mean.
There are three circuits, which I think are called Pendam Trail, Summit Trail and Continental Trail which are respectively 9km, 16km and 25km. The last two do have a fairly long uphill section however which is known as "legburner hill".
If you don't like the sound or look of that have a look at http://www.mbwales.com/wheretoride/index.htm.
Wherever you go I hope you have fun.
Bore Da and all that.
i think we've got it sorted. Where going to a campsite in the south west of the brecon beacons. 15 minuts from Afan and a bit longer to Cwm Carn. also run by a few bikers, wlakers and cavers, who will gladly show people the best trails and offer a drop off and pick up system to the local area. Also got a secure lockup when your bikes not in use. Also campfires and partying are encouraged.

mynd du is close by too ;)
3 days till i go now. starting to get excited but quite apprehensive, having had very little DH experience, oh well you've got to start somewhere. Watching the unscene clip of the track some of the jump look rather large but it says they have escape routes and different lines. so i should be ok fingers crossed.
if you get chance go to cwmcarn you wont be disappointed it is awesome its got table tops ,hip jumps ,gaps, huge berms, all supersize but you can go around them if you like.
mynydd du is another great track if you like roots rocks logs really fast narrow fill your pants with shit kinda track, its a bit of a slog to get to the top but well worth the effort.
there is another but thats a secret...
Well my trip to wales was alright shame about quite a major lack of riding. On the tuesday i went to a large bmx track at bryn bac park (because cwmcarn uplift doesn't run on a tuesday) the track had a proper gate start loads of supersized berms woops and doubles. I misjudged one of the pump sections wrong and took a tumble resulting in crazy grazes up my arms so i was soar for cwm carn the next day. Wednesday morning woke up to the sound of heavy rain and when i got to cwmcarn the place was soaked. the track was still fairly rideable though with berms shutes rocks and take offs everywhere. I took the moore conservative option to go around or roll over the kickers untill on the bottom section with the car park in site i found my self heading towards the largest of 3 take off options with very little speed and what i didn't know to be a loose rock landing on the other side and took a tumble totally bending my front disc rotor, snapping my shifter screen and tearing my shorts n jersey. oh well its a learning curve and i'll be back to ride the race a wyhkeham fingers crossed
how many runs did you get in and what was the uplift like ? in terms of turnaround etc etc
it was my first run of a 5 run uplift. trailer was so quick just hooked your bike in and it was ver secure forgot about that. not sure how long it was to the top but i know you didn't have long to wait in the carpark before he was there to take you back up. priority is given to those with a full day pass. I've still got 4 runs left if i ever go again. but never been to an uplift before it was pretty smooth and efficient. it was pretty quiet midweek so you could probably just turn up and get a few uplifts but he says at weekends its best to book. seemed a nice enough bloke if you got any question just drop him an email and he should reply fairly quickly
Sounds like it wasn't too bad other than your stack! Gives you an insight to downhill too right?
